Advancing Trustworthy and Human-Centered AI

AI @ SBU Libraries

Stony Brook University Libraries is actively advancing the adoption and integration of artificial intelligence tools and technologies within the academic library setting. Through its AI initiative, the Libraries serves as both a space for experimentation and a service provider supporting the use of AI tools in research, teaching, and library operations.

At a time when AI is transforming how knowledge is created, shared, discovered, and applied, SBU Libraries positions itself as a hub for exploration, access to resources, and AI literacy in ways that are thoughtful, critical, and ethical.

Our Vision for AI

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how knowledge is created, discovered, and used across higher education. Within this ecosystem, the University Libraries provides a distinct form of leadership grounded in scholarship, equity, stewardship, and academic integrity.

The Libraries lead by advancing AI literacy, fostering interdisciplinary communities of practice, and supporting faculty, staff, and students in responsible AI-enabled research and knowledge discovery. Through shared learning, ethical framing, and values-driven guidance, the Libraries help the university engage AI thoughtfully — ensuring these tools strengthen scholarly work, expand access to information, and amplify human expertise rather than replace it.

Library AI Services

SBU Libraries serves as a unique campus hub for practical, research-oriented, and responsible AI engagement. It offers a connected set of services, including secure on-premise access to large language models and GPU resources, consultations on AI model development and data science, AI literacy workshops and training, and guidance on copyright and other legal and ethical issues.

Together, these resources position the Libraries as a place where students, faculty, and staff can access both the technical infrastructure and the human expertise needed to engage AI thoughtfully in research, teaching, and public scholarship.

AI Club

A gentle introduction to the world of AI. The club offers library faculty and staff a safe and supportive space to explore new technologies, experiment confidently, and develop practical AI applications. Meets every two weeks.
