Inscribed on front end paper to Roy Cowden, who was Ciardi’s professor at the University of Michigan, where he took an M.A. in 1939, the same year he won the annual Hopwood Award with the manuscript that became Homeward to America in 1940. Cowden was the head of the Hopwood program and the man to whom the 1939 prize manuscript was handed.
