Borrow, Request, Renew

The Stony Brook University Libraries provide access to over 2 million volumes and hundreds of databases. Our stacks are open and available for browsing by all users. Borrowing privileges are extended to current students, faculty, staff, and courtesy borrowers who must follow library policies.

Borrowing from the Stony Brook University Libraries

Library Card

Your Stony Brook University ID serves as your library card. Alumni and courtesy borrowers receive issued library cards.

Locating Materials

Use the Search function to find items in the collection. Sign in with your NetID to place holds on up to 5 items, held for 10 days at the North Reading Room service desk.

Renewals

Most material in the general circulating collection can be renewed up to 3 times. Patrons can renew online, in person or by phone. If you are renewing online, you will need your NetID and password to access My Library Account.  Once you are logged in, click on My Account and then on the Loans link. Reserve material must be renewed in person.

Recalls

All loaned materials (except audiovisual and reserve items) are subject to recall. Email notifications inform patrons of new due dates. Overdue fines apply for late returns of recalled items.

Overdue Notices

Courtesy reminders are sent to the email address on file. Failure to receive a courtesy notice does not absolve responsibility for the accrued charges.

Proxy Borrowing

Faculty may designate up to two proxy borrowers (must be current SBU students, faculty, or staff). Faculty sponsors assume full responsibility for all materials borrowed by their proxies. Proxy designations remain valid for one year.
